Speech at Wyeth

Speech at Wyeth - December 17, 2003

Thank you for your warm welcome, perfect arrangement for meetings and tours at Pearl River and Colleageville.
Special thanks for Mr. Charles Lin who arranged this visit most meaningful and comfortable.

Philadelphia for me is a very special place.
My father went to school here from 1929 to 32. He studied Economics at U-Penn graduate school.

His certificate of graduation issued at that time was written on parchment in Latin, which, of course, I could not read. So I had to just assume it had certified his Masters degree.
Anyway, I framed it nicely and proudly hung it on the wall of my study at home.

Today, 71 years after my father left Philadelphia for returning to Seoul, his youngest son named Dahl is visiting Philadelphia as a newly elected CEO of KFC to celebrate the company's 10-year-long friendship with Wyeth, and to express the company's respect and appreciation to its friends at Wyeth who have offered opportunities and mentorship to KFC.
Without Wyeth, KFC could not have achieved this much of success potential in pharmaceutical intermediate business today.
I sincerely hope that this wonderful relationship, based on trust and respect, will continue to flourish.

Having a ceremonial get-together may seem simple, but it presented me with a pleasant conundrum: My problem was 'What would be an appropriate gift to bring to Wyeth'. We at KFC wanted it to be special and meaningful that will be cherished by Wyeth.
Luckily, we learned from Mr. Ahn that Wyeth has a tradition of naming its conference rooms after the countries it has relationships with. The moment I heard this, I thought I knew the answer.
Our gift will be something that will help decorate the Korea room in the most Korean way possible.

This calligraphy of very renown Korean calligrapher, I brought with me today, is made specifically for this purpose.
If Wyeth think it appropriate, we at KFC would be most honored to see this exhibited on the wall of the Korea room. The cost of the installation such as acrylic casing and illumination devices will, of course, be borne by KFC.

The sentences in this calligraphy are the selected excerpts from the preface of Dong-Eui-Bo-Gam, which is "The Dictionary of Medicine for Korean (Oriental) Doctors". This dictionary was compiled in the late 16th century by a Korean doctor of Eastern medicine, Huh Joon, who is still held in the highest regard by the Korean people.

Coincidentally, this celebrated doctor and I are from the same family Huh.
Here I must answer a very frequently asked question: "Why do you use spelling of H.U.G.H. for Huh, not H.U.H.?"
My answer is very simple and it starts with a simple question of my own: "How do people decide on the spelling of their family names?" Yes, you just follow the way your father spelled it.
In my case also, I followed the golden rule and took the spelling from my father's certificate of graduation, which I mentioned earlier.
Then the next question I must answer is: "Why did your father use the spelling, H.U.G.H. to start with?" Unfortunately I was only 6 years old when he passed away, and I was not smart enough to ask such a question.

Last night, in my hotel room, I paged through the White Pages of Greater Philadelphia to see if there is any phone number listed under the family name of H.U.G.H.
I was curious and also, I must say, vaguely suspicious of my father. After all, Mr. H.U.G.H. was a strapping thirtysomething when he lived in this city. Who knows? He could have had a romance with a Philadelphian beauty and left a footprint here as well, still visible.

Thank you for your patience in hearing out this lengthy Korean H.U.G.H./H.U.H family story.
Anyway, we are all one mortal family seeking immortality through medicine.

Thank you.
